Building Hope

Keeping Families Together in Liberia

Around the world, millions of children live in orphanages and large group homes. Yet studies reveal that 80% of these children still have at least one living parent. Often, families facing extreme poverty feel forced to place their children in long-term care simply to meet basic needs like food, shelter, and education.

At BCH, we believe children belong in families, just as God designed. That’s why in Gbonota, Liberia, we’re not only meeting immediate needs with food and supplies—we’re also helping the village build a school that will keep children in their homes, provide education, and give parents vocational training.

Family-based care means children stay where they thrive most: safe, loved, and with their families. And as we serve, the Gospel reaches entire households with hope and healing.

This is why BCH is moving decisively toward family-based care, both here in the U.S. and internationally. Because Scripture is clear, and experience affirms it: Children need their families. God designed the family as the safest, most nurturing environment for children to grow, thrive, and hear the Gospel.

One of the clearest examples of this shift is happening in Gbonota, Liberia. The school building is moving along quickly. This week, they are completing the roof! This school will not only provide education for children—it will also equip parents with vocational training to sustain their families. By strengthening families at the root, children remain where they belong: in their homes, loved and cared for by their parents.

The Gospel at the Center

Our commitment goes beyond education and daily needs. Family-based care means reaching the whole family with the Good News of Jesus Christ. As families are strengthened, communities are transformed. As children grow up in safe, Christ-centered homes, we see the promise of Psalm 68:6 fulfilled: “God sets the lonely in families.”

We envision a future where children thrive in the embrace of their families, where parents are empowered to provide, and where communities shine as living testimonies of God’s provision.

There is still time to give towards the building of the school.

A Call to Prayer:

Help for Families in the Dominican Republic

We recently had the opportunity to send two BCH staff members, Tracy and Melissa, to the Dominican Republic to visit the 27 children in our care. During their time there, they witnessed firsthand the challenges these families face.

Most of these children have living parents, and most are Haitian refugees—not allowed to work, and their children are not recognized or allowed to attend school. Out of desperation, parents place their children with our foster families, where they now receive healthy meals, loving care, and education in a private school. In some situations, our foster homes are a safe daycare provider while the parents are working day labor opportunities.

Please join us in prayer for these families:

  • That parents will one day be allowed to work.
  • That children will be recognized and able to attend school.
  • That families will be reunited and strengthened through Christ’s love.

Together, we are standing in the gap until parents can raise their children at home, just as God designed.
